[00:00:30] Gary:
There's a challenge coming.
[00:00:32] Jay:
Oh, really? Is it a sound challenge?
[00:00:36] Gary:
There will be one.
[00:00:37] Jay:
Fudge.
[00:00:38] Gary:
It's not going to be one of those cool singing bowls. It's going to be my dinner bowl.
[00:00:43] Jay:
As long as it's not like that drill again. That was the most heinous thing to try to make sound or music with.
[00:00:53] Gary:
Yeah. But it's not a challenge if it's easy
[00:00:56] Jay:
Yeah. But we're talking about this thing we do. We both make music. Gary and I have this war where we go back and forth, and he likes to give me unusual sounds to turn into music.
[00:01:15] Jay:
He's given me quite a few interesting things: clippers, an actual beard trimmer, his dryer, his Black & Decker drill – which was the hardest to make music with. He even challenged me to make it in the style of drill music, which was even worse.
[00:01:42] Jay:
Thank you for that, Gary.
[00:01:44] Gary:
I told him there's a challenge coming. Your music's beautiful with all this stuff you do. But, I'm going to give you my dinner bowls, just clanging around, and see what you can do with that. If it sounds good, that's not a challenge.
[00:01:58] Jay:
It's not going to sound like Stomp, where there are glasses, cups, and pots making rhythmic sounds. No, he's going to take a ladle and just bang all his dirty dishes for about 30 seconds, make some noises, and say, "Go ahead." That's what he does to me.
[00:02:16] Jeralyn:
That's interesting because all sounds, like that famous song, "All the sounds of the earth are like music." Everything has a sound. It's a metaphor for how we transmute things.
[00:02:31] Jay:
No, you're spot on. So, welcome to the Tragedy Academy, a show created to bridge societal divides in a judgment-free zone using candor and humor. My name is Jay. Joining us today is Gerilyn Glass, internationally celebrated for her multifaceted career spanning from opera singer to crystal sound meditation leader. You’ve impacted so many fields: music, healing, spirituality. Tell us a bit about yourself. Welcome to the show.
[00:02:59] Jeralyn:
Thank you so much for having me. Wow.
[00:03:04] Jeralyn:
Music is that language that touches all human beings, no matter your culture, beliefs, income, or background. Music is that universal language. I’ve been blessed to have spent a life in music. I started as a young singer on Broadway – my first dream came true at age 19. I then moved into classical music by chance after hearing my first opera at the Metropolitan Opera. It was life-changing. I began to study it seriously and then lived in Europe for 20 years.
[00:03:42] Jeralyn:
Music has shaped so much of my life. I love to share that with people, whether it’s through familiar songs or the healing sounds like crystal bowls. Integrating music into our lives brings peace and unity.
[00:04:06] Jay:
I genuinely appreciate that. Humans have an intrinsic connection to music, which we too often undervalue. It can affect change instantly, in the long term, and in our approach to life. Music guides us, much like a soundtrack, reflecting our emotions and focus. If you're in a dark place, you’ll hear that dark electric guitar. If you’re in a loving place, you’ll hear the harp. Music influences both humans and animals profoundly.
[00:05:19] Jay:
We see animals flock to it. You'll see a person with a violin in a pasture surrounded by cows. It’s a frequency that transcends other senses. If we pay attention, we can hear the beauty in everything.
[00:05:37] Jeralyn:
Absolutely. Music is known to many cultures beyond just ours. In Germany, they found bird bone flutes from 40,000 to 60,000 years ago that used the pentatonic scale. Aborigine cultures have used didgeridoos for up to 70,000–80,000 years. Sound has traditionally been the people’s medicine.
[00:06:05] Jeralyn:
As an opera singer, I sensed the power of sound profoundly. Projecting into a 3,000-seat hall without amplification required grounding myself as a human instrument.
[00:06:54] Jeralyn:
Crystal bowls, made of pure quartz, have a special resonance. They evoke timelessness and a connection to something beyond. The sound feels familiar and pristine, often bringing one into a peaceful, centered state.
[00:08:13] Jeralyn:
Through crystal bowls, we can quiet the mind and drop into our true essence. They help us reconnect with our unique vibrational signature, aligning us with peace and unity.
[00:09:19] Jay:
What’s fascinating about combining ancient sounds with technology, like QR codes, is how it bridges the gap between the primal and the modern. The world is discovering more about sound's healing properties. Sound and energy together can guide us back to a state of balance.
[00:11:05] Jay:
Sounds have overtones and harmonics that can create a sacred, healing space. They support qualities such as confidence and self-esteem by grounding, centering, and expanding energy simultaneously.
[00:16:26] Jeralyn:
Music has always been an expression of love for me. When you experience pure, authentic sound, something within you expands. It quiets the noise in your mind, exposing your true self, the essence of who you are.
[00:20:00] Jeralyn:
During a trip to Tonga, I interacted with children through music. Despite not sharing a spoken language, the sound of the bowls created an instant connection. The children embraced the sounds with excitement, showing that music transcends cultural and linguistic barriers.
[00:25:00] Jay:
Humans should recognize the mimicry of sound and vibration in their lives. Music as a language and an emotional guide helps us understand and express our timeless, universal experience.
[00:30:45] Jeralyn:
I’ve been creating resources like a YouTube library with over 200 meditations. I have an oracle deck of crystal and metal singing bowls that you use in conjunction with the QR codes to hear the sounds, and we’ve developed an app called Source that offers sound baths, meditations, lectures, and more.
[00:33:42] Jeralyn:
We’re also working on a project inspired by Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, bringing together musicians from various genres to create a meditative journey titled Joy Reboot. Just as Beethoven’s work brought newness in his time, we aim to create a unified, joyful experience for modern audiences.
[01:00:01] Jay:
Thank you, Jeralyn. Your work in merging ancient sound with modern technology is pioneering. These healing tools help ground us, heal us, and reconnect us to ourselves and one another. We appreciate your insights and commitment to bringing music’s transformative power to the world.
[01:00:30] Jay:
Remember, everyone, be cool and keep learning. End of Transcript
